3 Dead, 4 Injured as Boat Runs onto NY Marshland

A powerboat ran aground off of Long Island, killing threepeople and seriously injuring four others, authorities said. The 40-footspeedboat ran onto marshland Sunday night off of the island’s Southern Shore,just south of the hamlet of Wantagh. The boats captain was catapulted off thevessel and pronounced dead by rescuers when they arrived at the scene.

Founder of SeaTow, a marine assistance organization, JoeFrohnhoefer, said one of his boats was the first to arrive at the crash site.According to Frohnhoefer said the boat was about 150 feet from the water. “Toit the marsh and run up on top of it like that, you would have to be going at apretty good rate of speed.” Said Nassau County Police Department Lt. KevinSmith.

NCPD said officers responded to the accident around 7 p.m.along with the Coast Guard. At least two people were airlifted to nearbyhospitals. The names of the victims have not been released.
