NYPD Officer Charged with Fatal DUI

For the second time in a month a New York City policeofficer has been arrested on charges of drunk driving.

The latest incident involved an officer killing a pedestrianin the Bronx. Police say 42-year-old Detective Kevin C. Spellman was drivingsouth on Kingsbridge Avenue in his government sedan when he struck a womancrossing the street near West 232nd Street. The pedestrian was lateridentified as 67-year-old Drana Nikac.

According to authorities detective Spellman appearedintoxicated. According to the police department’s chief spokesman, Paul J.Brown, responding officers said Spellman was “unsteady on his feet, and hesmelled of alcohol.” Spellman refused a breathalyzer at the scene and later atthe police station. He has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide,criminally negligent homicide and driving while intoxicated.
