Former Yankee, Leyritz, Denies Responsibility in Fatal DUI Crash

Former New York Yankee Jim Leyritz has denied responsibility for a two-car accident in which one person died.

“I wasn’t doing anything that I thought was against the rules, whether it be the drinking part or the actual driving part.” Said Leyritz.The former catcher was arrested on charges of suspected drunken driving on December 28, 2007.  Leyritz was driving northbound in an SUV when he collided with a westbound SUV in the middle of an intersection near downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

“There are records that will show that there was text messages and phone calls coming in at that time that could’ve distracted her.” Said Leyritz.

The driver of the other SUV, Fredia Veitch, mother of two,was thrown from her vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Leyritz’s blood-alcohol content was .14 percent when he was tested three hours after the accident. Veitch’s blood alcohol content was .18 percent. Both were over Florida’s legal limit of .08 percent.
