Student Sues School After Dodgeball Accident
/> A student at a Bronx school is suing the school districtafter being injured in a class game of dodgeball. Teachers at Intermediate School 219 allowed students to playthe game with hard soccer balls. 12 year-old Shane Reese was sitting out of thegame because he had just had some teeth repaired after a car crash. A roguesoccer ball struck Shane in the face, breaking his new bridgework. Mark Weinberger, Shane’s lawyer, says the school is to blamebecause “There was an issue of lack of supervision… There were six classeshuddled into this confined area… [Shane] wasn’t supposed to be playing and hewas struck in the face.” Education Department spokesman William Havemann did notcomment on the lawsuit, but said “We don’t believe dodgeball is an appropriateactivity, but there is no formal ban.” The city has offered Reese $20,000 in compensation.
