A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the maker of Salmonella-tainted peanut butter. Minnesota nursing home resident Shirley Mae Almer,
72, died of a Salmonella infection in December, after consuming peanut butter made by the Peanut Corporation of America.
Almer's family is suing Virginia-based Peanut Corporation of America, as well as King Nut Companies, which distributed the product to the nursing home. The family alleges that Peanut Corporation of America failed to properly train and supervise employees, failed to prevent cross-contamination, and failed to adequately test its products for safety, among other complaints.
According to the lawsuit, Minnesota health officials traced the Salmonella infection to an industrial-size jar of King Nut peanut butter at the nursing home kitchen. On January 13, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a recall of the King Nut product, as well as other products produced by Peanut Corporation of America.
Almer, who was born in New York, planned to leave the nursing home prior to becoming infected. After falling ill, she was transported to the hospital, where she later passed away.
