Woman Injured in Hit and Run

On Saturday night, a hit and run collision occurred in Flushing Meadow Park. Around 8pm, a van exited the Van Wyck Expressway and struck a parked car, throwing it into a woman walking by.

The woman was taken to New York Hospital of Queens where she was listed in critical condition. The van driver was later arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident causing injury.

Texting While Driving Banned

On Thursday, Governor David Paterson signed a bill banning texting while driving. In addition to cell phone use, laptops and other handheld devices are now forbidden while driving.

According to a recent study at Virginia Tech, texting while driving can make  you 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash. The bill hopes to reduce traffic collisions and fatalities.

Crash Kills 1

Early Wednesday morning, a crash occurred on the Brooklyn Bridge. At 4:11am, a car was driving along the Manhattan bound side when it struck a Department of Transportation dump truck.

The driver of the car was taken to New York Downtown Hospital for treatment. He was later pronounced dead there. Police kept part of the bridge shut down for several hours while investigating the crash.

Worker Killed in Bridge Accident

The Throgs Neck Bridge was closed down yesterday after an accident. A construction worker helping with renovations was struck by the boom of a small crane which was mounted on the back of a truck.

The details of the accident are currently not known. However, the fire department initially said that the man was killed by a fall. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Fire Kills 1

On Sunday afternoon, a fire broke out at a residential building in the Bronx. The fire departement was called to the scene shortly before 2pm to put out the blaze on the third floor.

One person was pulled from the burning building and was taken to Montefiore Hospital. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities investigated the cause of the fire.

Man Loses Leg in Accident

On Friday, a construction worker was injured in an accident in Queens. The worker was repaving Rockaway Boulevard when a car traveling 60mph came down the road. The worker pushed a coworker out of the way and was struck.

After the crash, the man was taken to Jamaica Hospital where he lost his leg. According to police, the driver was high on cocaine at the time and was arguing with a passenger. She has been charged with reckless endangerment, DWI and vehicular assault.

Man Dies in Scaffolding Accident

On Tuesday afternoon, a scaffoding collapse occurred at a Brooklyn construction site. Around 5:30pm, a senior worker was checking the scaffolding at the Park Slope apartment building on 12th St and 7th Ave when it collapsed.

The worker checking the scaffolding was killed in the collapse. Now, city officials are investigating to determine whether or not he was properly harnessed in the accident. Two other workers who were harnessed sustained only minor injuries.
