Pedestrian Safety
Pedestrians are everywhere in the city. Although it is the responsibility of motorists to watch out for pedestrians and their safety, those who travel on foot are ultimately the most vulnerable to injury and thus should exercise appropriate caution when walking near moving traffic. As a pedestrian, it is important to remember that just because you have right-of-way or a walk signal does not mean that the situation is actually safe. Regardless of whose turn it is to cross the street – a car or a pedestrian – the pedestrian is in the most dangerous situation.
Pedestrians should follow proper traffic laws and safety precautions when walking near roadways and crossing streets.
Pedestrian Safety Tips
Here are a few important safety tips to keep in mind when traveling by foot:
- Only cross the street at designated crosswalks.
- Before walking in front of a car that is slowing down, make eye contact with the driver. Make sure the driver actually sees you before you cross.
- Keep children close to you near busy roadways. Teach kids about proper street safety, and make sure they know to never venture into traffic.
- Always walk on the sidewalk, never in the street. If you must walk on the street because of damaged or non-existent sidewalks, always walk facing traffic so that you can see any vehicles that are approaching.
- At night or in low-light situations, dress in bright or reflective colors and carry a light source in order to help alert drivers of your presence.
- Plan your route in advance to minimize dangerous walking situations.
