Bicyclist Sues Dever Police Over Beating, False Arrest

/>

John Heaney a bicyclist from Denver, Colorado is suing the Denver Police Department charging police brutality and false arrest. A video taken by a professional photojournalist shows officers repeatedly punching and kicking Heaney, as well as slamming his face into the ground. The police officers claim that Heaney swore at them and punched one in the face, alledgedly this took place off camera. The police were working on an undercover scalping sting outside of Coors Field.

Heaney was charged with second-degree assault against a police officer, but when the videotape surfaced on the local news the Denver District Attorney's office dropped the charges and charged the officer with second-degree assault. The suit claims that officers made false statements about the arrest because they were unaware it was being filmed. Heaney's lawyer said officers who were involved were clearly willing, we're alleging, to have Mr. Heaney go to jail and become a felon to cover-up their wrongful actions." The law suit does not specify damages but Heaney is asking to be compensated for false arrest and the beating which resulted in bruising all over his body, two broken front teeth and other damages that required surgery.
